Chrysanthemum Stone is a rare, gorgeous mineral complex of Dolomite, Limestone, Clay, Porphyry, and Gypsum. This amazing stone/crystal is also referred to as “Flower Stone”, comprising of the Flower-like patterns of Calcite, Celestite, Feldspar, and Andalusite that are visible on its surface. Each Stone is one of a kind, with colors ranging from Black, or dark Gray, with the flower colors in a white to Gray-white pattern. Chrysanthemum Stones were created around 270-290 million years ago, formed by high temperature pressure that compressed rich organic layers of mud at the bottom of Ancient Seas. Dating back to the Paleozoic era, these rare minerals were formed from geological changes during the Permian Age, allowing the crystals within to grown outward in flat radial formations. These distinct patterns resembled to beauty and energy of Chrysanthemum flowers, and were revered as a symbol of Luck and Strength.
In order for these very old specimens to show their beauty, many times the stones are sandblasted or polished to allow the flowers to pop, and care should be taken since their Mohs hardiness is low, around 3-3.5 which make them easy to scratch.
