Mookaite is a gorgeous crystal that is found only in Australia! The name is derived from the Kennedy ranges area in Western Australia, near the Mooka Creek. According to locals from that region, the Aboriginal word “Mooka” means ‘Running Water”.
This special and very unusual patterning crystal has a very long history, dating back to around the Cretaceous Period. Composed of cryptocrystalline silica, with ‘radiolarian microfaunal structures’, otherwise known as microscopic sea creatures that are in fossil form. Ancient shallow seas retreated and the sediments were deposited, eventually turning the microscopic forms solid. When combined with iron rich groundwater, the sediment created the striking colors and movement, ranging from Pink, Red, Yellow, Purple, Tan, and White in beautiful mineral slabs.
